LMFP and NMC Blend: A Safer Battery Solution

Integrating Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate (LMFP) into Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) cathodes is proving to be a highly effective strategy for improving lithium-ion battery safety by boosting thermal stability and mitigating the risk of thermal runaway.

✅ In the SAE J2464 nail penetration test, a 60Ah LMFP/NMC811 composite cell successfully avoided thermal runaway, with the maximum temperature limited to just 90°C — a remarkable safety improvement.

✅ Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analysis further confirms that LMFP raises the overall cathode decomposition temperature and significantly reduces exothermic heat generation during thermal decomposition.


Why does this combination work so well?

Voltage compatibility: LMFP and NMC811 operate within similar voltage windows, enabling seamless electrochemical integration without sacrificing cell performance.

Thermal management: The smaller LMFP particles physically surround and complement the larger NMC particles, enhancing thermal stability.
